In light of the new ICC Afghanistan investigation, Prime Minister Trudeau should launch a long-overdue public inquiry into Canada’s policies and practices relating to the transfer of hundreds of detainees to Afghan authorities during Canada’s military mission in that country.

We call on Canada to demonstrate “strict adherence to the rule of law and respect for human rights” by taking an unequivocal stand against the illegal sanctioning of humanitarian goods.

We call on Canada to redouble efforts to promote a serious dialogue on how NATO members can begin to close the gap between the Alliance nuclear doctrine and the disarmament obligations of its members under the NPT.

Whatever the outcome of Canada’s Security Council bid, robust mechanisms for sustained, substantive civil society engagement are an indispensable part of enhancing Canadian capacity for UN leadership on peace and security.

As the Trump administration turns its back on the Ottawa Treaty banning anti-personnel landmines, we call on the Government of Canada to redouble its support for the stigmatization any use of these indiscriminate weapons and to increase its funding for vital demining activities.
