Washington pundits are backing a proposal to send weapons to Ukraine. Here’s why they all need to take a deep breath.

“The demand for UN Blue Helmets has never been greater. But UN peacekeeping cannot begin to live up to its potential to assist countries in transition from civil war to stable governance unless it has the resources to do the job.”

“Canada is well placed, I believe, to play a leading role in the global effort to ensure nuclear nonproliferation and disarmament. This will mean, in part, reviving the political and diplomatic effort that characterized Canadian governmental engagement in earlier periods.”

If we are to avoid once more reaping the whirlwind generated by an over-reliance upon armed force, an entirely different approach will be required. Specifically, people everywhere will have to insist that diplomacy displace defence at the centre of international policy. Relative to the alternatives, diplomacy’s approach to the non-violent management of international relations through dialogue, negotiation and compromise is highly cost-effective.
