Never get involved in a land war in Asia!

On 12 December 1979 the Soviet Politburo took the decision to send Soviet troops into Afghanistan.

The invasion began on 27 December 1979, and the last Soviet troops left Afghanistan just over nine years later, on 15 February 1989.
