Government rejects icebreaker offer

The Davie shipyard in Quebec is offering to build Canada’s new polar icebreaker for half the price and under half the time required by the government’s chosen shipyard.
A new report examining the government’s plans to build Arctic/Offshore Patrol Ships has just been released by the Rideau Institute and the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives.
On March 7th, the government signed a $288-million contract with Irving Shipbuilding of Halifax for design work on the long-promised Arctic offshore patrol ships. But construction of the ships is not expected to begin until 2015.
