Poll Finds Canadians Want Out

A newly released poll by The Canadian Press and Harris-Decima shows nearly 90 per cent of Canadians want troops out of Afghanistan by the mission’s scheduled end date of 2011, or earlier.

46 per cent of respondents indicated the Canadian Forces should remain in Afghanistan only until the scheduled end date of 2011, while an equally strong 40 per cent said troops should be withdrawn from the region before then. Only eight per cent of those surveyed believed the current mission in Afghanistan should be extended beyond 2011.

Canadians are also not convinced of the effectiveness of the planned increase of American troops in the region, with 54 per cent indicating they do not believe the new troops will be successful. 41 per cent believe the newly expanded force will be a success.
