Canadians for a Nuclear Weapons Convention (CNWC) has awarded Rideau Institute President and former Canadian Ambassador for Disarmament to the UN, Peggy Mason, its 2016 Achievement Award:

… for her ongoing commitment to a nuclear weapons-free world and for her persistent disarmament advocacy as a diplomat and civil society leader.”

The award will be presented at a reception on 24 October, immediately following a conference hosted by the Canadian Network to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (CNANW) on “Building Momentum for Nuclear Disarmament”. For the full programme, click CNANW Conf-Programme.

This conference is the first of a series of events this week highlighting the urgency for Canada to resume its traditional leadership role in promoting nuclear disarmament. On Tuesday morning there will be a breakfast meeting of Canadian Parliamentarians for Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament (PNND) with CNANW members, featuring a panel discussion with former Ambassadors Paul Meyer and Peggy Mason.

Wednesday evening the public is invited to a meeting on Parliament Hill hosted by NDP Foreign Affairs critic, Hélène Laverdière, to which all Senators and MPs have been invited. Click here for the Oct-26 Mtg Notice.

The aim of this meeting is to discuss practical ways to encourage Canada to vote in favour of launching nuclear disarmament negotiations when the issue is voted on in early November at the UN First Committee of the General Assembly. For more background on this issue see our blog of August 26, 2016  by clicking here.

To attend, RSVP required by 5:00 pm October 24, 2016.
