NDP endorses ICAN nuclear weapons ban!

NDP federal Mps

NDP Leader Thomas Mulcair has reaffirmed his party’s commitment to supporting a global nuclear weapons ban, championed by Ceasefire.ca and the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN).

In a letter responding to our online petition for a Global Parliamentary Appeal for a Nuclear Weapons Ban, Mr. Mulcair affirmed:

We have been consistent in our support for nuclear disarmament…. It is evident that nuclear arms continue to pose a significant threat to global security and this threat is becoming more urgent…. In December of 2010, New Democrats arranged all party support for a motion calling on the government to take the lead against nuclear proliferation and [for] increased nuclear disarmament.

We believe a comprehensive nuclear weapons convention should be a top priority for Canada and therefore, take this matter seriously. That is one of the reasons why NDP MP Hélène Laverdière currently co-chairs Canada’s chapter of Parliamentarians for Nuclear Non-proliferation and Disarmament (PNND). Please be assured that we will continue to push the Conservative government to show international leadership on nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation of nuclear weapons.

Many MPs of the 100-member caucus had already voiced their support for our campaign, including Paul Dewar, Glenn Thibeault, Chris Charlton, and more.

We at Ceasefire.ca extend our deepest appreciation to the members of the NDP for their support of a world without nuclear weapons and their demonstrated commitment to this principled stance.
